GET A JOB

I left off a couple of days ago with my little autobiographical story sitting in my mother’s little office searching the Tampa/ Plant City, Florida want ads for a job. Although I had the shelter of my parent’s home, I was feeling very lost and dismayed.

These days when I wake up in the morning the first thing I do before I get out of bed is open my consciousness and realize that I am one with God; not that today is a great day or a bad day, but that God is appearing as you and me and all of creation. That’s the secret to my success. That day when I woke up my mind was totally focused on my dire need for a job. I just wasn’t conscious then of what I know now.

I still had no real marketable employment skills and the job market was not good in Plant City. For me, it came down to a job at the shrimp processing plant or the cow and hog slaughterhouse. Both of these big commercial food processors were nearby, so I walked over, since my car had been repossessed, to apply for a job.

On my way up the long driveway to the shrimp plant, the stink was so powerful that I just turned back. I knew I could never work there. To this day, it’s hard to believe that a large number of people were working at that plant; obviously, we do what we believe we have to do. Thank God there was a job for me at the slaughterhouse.

Everything seemed just fine when I walked up to the slaughterhouse and I was hired immediately for $2.56/hour. I don’t know what it would have been like working inside the shrimp plant, but I definitely wasn’t ready for what awaited me inside the slaughterhouse.
